In 2019, Maryam was selected to carry out research and development for the Transforming Narratives project. This project which aims to establish Birmingham as a global centre for contemporary arts from Pakistan and Bangladesh.
For this artistic programme, Maryam travelled to her motherland for the very first time and explored what it meant to be a woman in Pakistan today. Ek Aurat Ka Safar, (the literal meaning of, A Woman’s Journey in Urdu) was inspired by her own upbringing as a young woman with Pakistani origins. She interviewed women of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, religions and social classes in Pakistan in this series to collect an accurate representation of women in Pakistan today.
This visit was supported by British Council (England/ Pakistan) and Arts Council England. Maryam also collaborated with individuals and organisations in Pakistan such as, The Pakistan Heritage Foundation, Karachi Biennale, Citizens Archive Pakistan, National History Museum (Lahore), The Aga Khan Trust for Culture and The Walled City of Lahore Authority.
